A brief overview of Lufthansa AG

Lufthansa AG was founded in 1953 as the flag carrier airline in Germany. After privatizing the airline in 1989, Lufthansa AG started to expand its activities progressively becoming one of the largest air transportation services provider globally. The airline group employed almost 105,300 people globally as of December 31, 2021. When it comes to operating indicators, the group demonstrated a remarkable performance until the coronavirus pandemic hit. In 2010, Lufthansa Group transported only 46.9 million passengers, down from 145.2 million passengers in 2019. In that same year, the company generated only 16.8 billion euros, down from 36.4 billion euros in 2019. The operating profit of Lufthansa Group was at a loss of 2.3 billion euros in 2021.

Disaggregated activities of Lufthansa AG

The Lufthansa Group owns Lufthansa German Airlines, Eurowings, SWISS, Austrian Airlines, and Lufthansa Cargo with a total group fleet consisting of 713 aircraft in 2021. Eurowings had only 7.2 million passengers on board, making it the eleventh leading low-cost carrier worldwide in 2020. Yet, the Lufthansa Group’s services are not only restricted to the transportation of passenger and goods. It also provides essential aircraft maintenance services through Lufthansa Technik. Major activities of Lufthansa Technik are comprised of maintenance, repair and overhaul (MRO). In 2021, Lufthansa Technik’s revenue from MRO activities was four billion euros.
