Platform as a Service (PaaS) - additional information
Platform as a Service is a segment cloud computing that provides users with a platform to develop, run, and manage applications, while freeing them from the task of developing and maintaining the traditional infrastructure required to run an application. Users are given control of the software, while the provider provides the network, servers, storage, operating system(s), runtimes, databases, and other services.
Compared to cloud infrastructure and software services, Platform as a Service represents the smaller end of the cloud computing market. Despite this, the segment has already developed into a multibillion dollar market and revenues are expected to rise significantly over the coming years. Since this statistic was released in 2013, newer estimates have put the revenue from the Platform as a Service market at 3.8 billion U.S. dollars in 2015, while other sources have estimated that PaaS may have been worth as much as 8 billion U.S. dollars worldwide in 2014. Irrespective of its current size, it is clear that cloud platform services are being effectively spearheaded by Platform as a Service providers, including Salesforce, Amazon, IBM, and Microsoft.
