Segmentation
In India, commercial vehicles are classified based on their gross vehicle weight (GVW). There were three categories. Vehicles under 7.5 tons are considered as light commercial vehicles. Vehicles between 7.5 and 16.2 tons are categorized as medium commercial vehicles (MCV) and vehicles over 16.2 tons were termed as heavy commercial vehicles. During the financial year 2018, heavy commercial vehicles had the highest sales volume among the different categories.
Leading manufacturers
Tata Motors was the leading manufacturer of both commercial and passenger vehicle segments. It had the biggest market share among the heavy-duty vehicle manufacturers. Tata motors had many firsts to its credit, including customer loyalty program in the commercial vehicle industry, introducing warranties for long periods and the first six-axle and 16 wheeler trucks.. Its fiercest competitor, Ashok Leyland, established in 1984, went on to acquire a share of over 25 percent in 2018. Medium and heavy commercial vehicles contribute more than half to their sales volume share. Other players in this market include Mahindra and Mahindra, SML Isuzu, Daimler India, Eicher Motors, and Volvo.
