Global fish production
Although fish farming, also known as aquaculture, has become more prevalent over the last decade, most of the world’s fish is still obtained through fishing. Most of the global fish production was utilized for human consumption, with only a small share being used for non-food purposes.
Aquaculture in the United States
In 2016, the United States produced around 444.37 thousand metric tons of fish in fish farms. In the early 2000s this figure was higher on average and experienced a sudden drop between 2010 and 2011. Despite this, the production value of U.S. aquaculture exhibited an upward trend in the last several years, amounting to 1.45 billion U.S. dollars in 2016.
