Global number of oil tanker spills by quantity 1970-2022
There were a total of seven oil tanker spills worldwide in 2022. Four incidents had a release volume of less than 700 metric tons. In the last two decades the amount of oil leaked by tanker spills generally declined, although 2018 and 2021 stood out as an unusually perilous year for oil shipping. In 2018, the Sanchi tanker collision resulted in the death of all crew members, and spilled a quantity of 113 thousand metric tons of condensate polluting the East China Sea.
