Leading global chemical companies
The chemical industry is one of the most important foundations for the world’s economy as we know it. One of the primary undertakings of this industry is the transformation of raw materials into industrial chemical products, which are fundamental for other industrial sectors. The principle chemical products are polymers and plastics, which are responsible for nearly 80 percent of the industry’s production volume. Including the pharmaceutical sector, the chemical industry makes more than four trillion U.S. dollars of revenue globally.
Germany is one of the countries with an old and well-established chemical industry. Two of the largest chemical companies worldwide, BASF and Bayer, originated there. BASF generated approximately 74.5 billion U.S. dollars of revenue in 2017. DowDuPont, a U.S.-based company based in Michigan, is the world’s number two based on revenue. In 2017, the newly formed company based on the merger between Dow Chemical and DuPont reported some 62.5 billion U.S. dollars of revenue. The chemical company with the highest market capitalization in June 2018 was Bayer from Germany.
