BASF - Statistics & Facts

BASF is a German chemical company and the world’s largest company within the chemical industry, based on revenue. In 2016, BASF generated approximately 57.6 billion euros of revenue and reported a net income of some four billion euros. BASF sells most of its products to customers from the chemical and plastic industries, as well as from the energy and resources sectors. Nearly 114 thousand people are employed worldwide by BASF.


The company consists of six segments. BASF Oil and Gas was once the largest segment, generating more than one fifth of the total revenue. Today, BASF Functional Materials & Solutions is the largest segment, yielding about 18.7 billion euros of revenue. The other BASF segments include Agricultural Solutions, Chemicals, and Performance Products.

From a regional point of view, BASF generates 30 percent of its revenue in its country of origin. North America is the second largest market, responsible for some 26 percent of the company’s total revenue. BASF predicts that by 2020, the so called emerging markets will be responsible for almost half of its total revenue.
