As the fourth most populous country on earth, Indonesia poses a large and fast-growing market for mobile technologies. In 2013, around 68 percent of the Indonesian population owned a mobile phone. However, the share of mobile phone users that use a smartphone is comparatively small. The penetration rate of smartphones in Indonesia ranged at 23 percent in 2013, whereas in China, another emerging market, 71 percent of the mobile phones used were smartphones. The sector has a high potential for growth. According to forecasts, smartphone ownership in Indonesia will double from 24 to 53 percent between 2013 and 2017.
Indonesia also provides major opportunities for the mobile internet market. Along with the growth of smartphone users, the penetration of mobile internet users continues to soar. A characteristic feature of the Indonesian mobile internet market lies in its focus on social media. As of the third quarter 2013, 98 percent of the population owned at least one social network account, while accessing social networking sites was the most popular mobile internet activity for urban Indonesians. Jakarta, the capital and largest city of Indonesia, is named the number one Twitter city in the world, since it generates more Tweets than anywhere else. Social media in Indonesia is not only much used by local and international companies to establish brands and boost their businesses, it also plays a crucial role in shaping public opinions.
