As the fourth most populous country on earth, Indonesia poses a large and fast-growing market for mobile technologies. The sector has a high potential for growth. According to forecasts, smartphone penetrations rate in Indonesia will rise from 26 to 33 percent between 2018 and 2023. The number of smartphone users in Indonesia could reach as high as 89.86 million by the year 2022.

Indonesia also provides major opportunities for the mobile internet market. Along with the growth of smartphone users, the penetration of mobile internet users continues to soar. A characteristic feature of the Indonesian mobile internet market lies in its focus on social media. As of the third quarter of 2018, 81 percent of the population who are using the internet do own a Facebook account and 52 percent were on Twitter. In 2012, Jakarta, the capital and largest city of Indonesia, was named the number one Twitter city in the world, since it generated more Tweets than anywhere else. Social media in Indonesia is not only much used by local and international companies to establish brands and boost their businesses, it also plays a crucial role in shaping public opinions.
