Number of mobile phone users in Indonesia – additional information
As the fourth most populous country on earth, Indonesia poses a large and fast-growing market for mobile technologies. The sector has a high potential for growth. In 2014, it was estimated that around 87 percent of households in Indonesia had a mobile phone. According to forecasts, smartphone ownership in Indonesia will rise from 32.6 to 43.2 percent between 2014 and 2017. The number of smartphone users in Indonesia could reach as high as 96.2 million by the year 2021.
Indonesia also provides major opportunities for the mobile internet market. Along with the growth of smartphone users, the penetration of mobile internet users continues to soar. A characteristic feature of the Indonesian mobile internet market lies in its focus on social media. As of the fourth quarter 2016, 48 percent of the population owned a Facebook account and 38 percent were on Twitter. In 2012, Jakarta, the capital and largest city of Indonesia, was named the number one Twitter city in the world, since it generated more Tweets than anywhere else. Social media in Indonesia is not only much used by local and international companies to establish brands and boost their businesses, it also plays a crucial role in shaping public opinions.
