Newly diagnosed lung cancer in England 1995-2017, by gender This statistic shows the registrations of newly diagnosed cases of lung cancer in England from 1995 to 2017, by gender. Lung cancer, also known as lung carncinoma, occurs when there is abnormal cell growth in the lungs, this abnormal growth can spread to other parts of the body. In 2017, 20,333 males and 18,573 females were registered as newly diagnosed with lung cancer. The number for newly registered cases increased for females and decreased for males in comparison with the previous year.
