Airbnb has become a global phenomenon in recent years, while it has seen its fair share of controversy since the company’s foundation in 2008 it is still a highly valuable company. In 2021, Airbnb was valued at 113 billion U.S. dollars, up from 75 billion the previous year.

While Airbnb’s speedy growth has caused bad press due to issues such as property rental shortages for locals, illegal sub-letting & safety concerns, it has still got a substantial number of loyal users. The privately-owned accommodation rental and sharing website has becoming increasingly well-known all over the world, mostly due to the company providing cheaper more ‘authentic’ alternatives to a hotel room. Given its high brand value, it comes to no surprise that the number of Airbnb platform users has experienced a significant increase in the last five years in the U.S. and Europe, two of the company's key markets.

In 2020, the average number of nights per Airbnb booking worldwide was a tie between all three of these regions. Guests stayed on average over four nights per booking inside Latin America, the Middle East, and Africa (EMEA), and North America.
