New passenger car registrations in Japan reached a grand total of approximately 4.3 million units in 2019, of which almost 1.6 million were standard cars. The number of newly registered minicars, also called kei cars, declined from a peak of over 1.8 million units in 2014 to under 1.5 million registrations in 2019. Japan is one of the most important automobile markets, both in terms of production and sales.
