Breakdown of moviegoers in France 2012-2018, by age group

Since 2017, it appears that the majority of moviegoers in France were aged between 25 and 49 years. People from this age group represented almost 40 percent of cinema admissions in the country in January 2018. That year, France was the second leading European country in terms of cinema admissions per capita.

Who are the moviegoers in France?

The French appear to love cinema. Compared to other European countries, French people are massive moviegoers. In 2017, there were 3.1 cinema admissions per inhabitant in France, compared to 1.5 in Germany and 2.2 in Spain. Most of them were males, but almost everybody goes to the cinema in France, regardless of gender or socio-professional category. Some of the moviegoers are even particularly assiduous. In January 2018, more than 27 percent of French people going to the movies admitted doing so once every week.

The habits of the French when going to the movies

France had more than 5.9 thousand screens in 2017, the highest number among all the countries in Europe. Even though France has an important cinema industry and produces a large amount of films every year, it seems that the public prefer American movies. The French enjoy their movies (French or not), usually at the end of the day, between 8 and 9 pm. Studies have also shown that during the months of the end of the year, like November and December, attendance in movie theaters increases. This might be explained by family time and holidays during Christmas, as well as bad weather which causes people to favor indoor activities compared to outdoor ones.
