Average price of a grand piano in the U.S. 2005-2019

In 2019, the average unit price for a grand piano was 21.9 thousand U.S. dollars, up from 20.8 thousand the previous year. Generally, pianos are distinguished into two types: grand and upright pianos. A grand piano has horizontal strings and frame, the strings spreading away from the keyboard. On the other hand, an upright piano has a vertical frame and strings and is usually less expensive than a grand piano.

Growth and fall trends

In the United States, the wholesale value of grand pianos was approximately 118.41 million U.S. dollars – a figure that has been growing over the last decade. The number of grand pianos sold in the U.S. in 2019 amounted to over 9.7 thousand. However, this number has declined significantly over the last eight years – in 2005 over 35 thousand grand pianos had been sold.

Do U.S. consumers like classical music?

In a 2018 survey, around 17 percent of respondents stated that they were currently listening to classical music, which makes classical music one of the least listened to music genres among U.S. consumers. Ranking first was rock music, with over 56 percent of respondents stating they have a preference for this genre.
