According to the figures released by the French Ministry of the Environment in 2019, the total French car fleet has grown in recent years, increasing from around 28.63 million passenger cars in 1999 to 32.03 million in 2019. Figures have nevertheless experienced a downward trend since 2014.
The number of new passenger cars registered in France is reducing
While the number of newly registered passenger cars has varied much more in recent years, figures also seem to be on a downward trend, especially since the 2009 peak, which has not been exceeded since. Much in the same spirit, the number of new electric passenger cars registered in France significantly rose since their arrival on the French automotive market. In fact, the annual number of electric passenger cars newly registered has increased considerably between 2010 and 2020. Another thing that could impact the passenger cars use within French society is that such vehicles generate a significant share of CO2 emissions in France.
Low gasoline prices, an increase of the CO2 emissions in France?
There are indeed concerns involving the CO2 emissions released by passenger cars because of the fall of oil prices. Despite the overall upward trend around the unleaded gasoline average price and its numerous abrupt variations over the two past decades in France, the fear that the carbon dioxide emissions start increasing again is still very present. In recent years, France managed overall to reduce its CO2 emissions, even though the figures have still shown growth in some years.
