Console operating systems: market share in the United Kingdom (UK) 2012-2019

Sony maintained their majority share of the console operating system market in 2019, holding a 54.44 percent share of the market in 2019. Microsoft’s system edged closer, achieving a 45.02 percent share, up from 34.51 percent in 2018.

PS4 levels Sony up

  The PlayStation line of consoles is a consistent star performer for Sony, and the fourth generation of the console saw Sony go one-up in the console wars. In the United Kingdom (UK), Sony sold approximately 5.38 million units of the PS4 from 2013 to 2018, while still managing to sell close to 758 thousand PS3 consoles over the same period. Although Microsoft’s third generation console continued to sell well from 2011 onwards, their fourth-gen offering sold 4.62 million units from 2013 to 2018.

PlayStation 2 still number one

  The PS4 recently became the first of the current generation of consoles to exceed 100 million units sold, however, it is a long way away from becoming the highest selling console of all time. The PlayStation 2 still holds that title, with well over 150 million units sold.
