Global unit sales of Sony PlayStation 4 consoles 2014-2023

As of September 2023, cumulative sales of Sony’s PlayStation 4 gaming console had risen to more than 117 million units. Sales trends for the PS4 have been somewhat unusual: the device sold more units in the third and fourth years after its release than in the first two. Even as the console begins to age, strong sales during the holiday season have ensured that Sony continues to sell millions of units of its flagship gaming console each year.

Sony’s PlayStation brand has been one of the biggest names in the console gaming market since the release of its initial console in 1994. Both the PlayStation 2 and initial PlayStation sold over 100 million units during their respective lifetimes, with the PS2 ranking as the highest selling console of all time with over 158 million unit sales. As the console gaming landscape has changed, Sony has introduced generation after generation of successful PlayStation products and expanded its offerings into related markets such as handheld gaming devices and online gaming networks. As of June 2023, the PlayStation Network had around 108 million active users and provides subscribers with access to games, streaming services, and even social networking features.
