Cat and dog owning households in Norway 2010-2017 From 2010 to 2017, the share of cats in Norwegian households was just over 30 percent. By comparison, over this period, roughly 20 percent for households owned at least one dog. Cats seemed to be a very popular pet in Norway; the number increased in recent years and peaked in 2016 at 770 thousand animals.  
 Pet cats in Sweden

   In Norway’s neighboring country Sweden, the situation was similar. Since 2012, the share of households owning at least one cat remained stable at 17 percent, while 13 percent of Swedish households owned a dog. In this country too, cats were more common to have as a pet than dogs. As of 2016, there were nearly 1.3 million pet cats registered in Sweden.

Pet cats in Denmark

  The population of pet cats in Denmark in 2016 was measured at a number of 690 thousand animals. As in Norway and Sweden, more households had cats than dogs as a pet in this year and the year that followed. It is striking that the situation was different before. From 2010 to 2014, the share of households owning at least one dog grew to 23 percent, while it was 18 percent for pet cats.
