Active organ waiting list in the United Kingdom (UK) 2018 At the end of March 2018, there were 4,820 patients on the active transplant list in the United Kingdom (UK) waiting for a kidney transplant. The number of individuals waiting for a kidney transplant dwarfed the number of patients waiting for any other organ in the country. Those waiting for a lung transplant had the second-highest number of active patients at 344, followed by 333 waiting for a liver transplant
Transplant activity in the UK

2,364 kidney transplants took place in the UK in the financial year 2017/18. In 2017, this represented a rate of 52.1 transplants per million population, the highest rate of any organ transplantation in that year. Liver transplants had a rate of 15.3 transplants per million and then pancreas transplants followed with a rate of three per million population.

Kidney transplants in the rest of Europe

With a kidney transplant rate of 52.1 per million, the UK had the fourth highest rate in the European Union. The only countries with a higher rate of kidney transplantation in this year was the Netherlands (57.6 pmp), France (58.2 pmp) and Spain at the top with 70.5 transplants per million population.
