Throughout the past decade, the U.S. has been decreasing its use of coal, and increasing the use of natural gas for electricity generation. In 2021, natural gas was by far the largest source of electricity in the North American country, with a share of 38 percent. Nevertheless, that year saw the contribution of coal register its first annual increase since 2013, once more surpassing renewables to account for 22 percent of the power mix.
