Number of natural gas, coal and petroleum combined heat and power (CHP) plants from independent power producers in the United States decreased over the years. In 2021, there were 39 fewer natural gas CHP plants compared to 2010, while coal CHP plants decreased by 37 plants within the same years. By comparison, CHP plants from other renewable sources rose from 41 to 52 plants, from 2010 to 2021, respectively.
