Racism and xenophobia cases in Belgium 2008-2021

In the last decade, each year Belgian authorities registered between 800 and 1,400 cases of racism and xenophobia. The number of cases registered was lowest in 2013 and peaked in the most recent time period. In 2021, around 1,100 racism cases were registered. Racism accounted for roughly three quarters of all discrimination cases in Belgium in 2021.

 Racism cases in the Netherlands 

  In Belgium’s neighboring country the Netherlands, the number of racism cases registered was considerably higher. In 2017, authorities in the Netherlands registered just over 1.9 thousand cases of racism. The number of cases registered here peaked in 2014, at nearly 2.8 thousand cases. The large majority of the cases registered in the Netherlands in 2017 were insults, at 72 percent. Violence was less common, but still made up 19.3 percent of all cases registered.

Racism cases in Italy

   Racism was a problem in Italy as well. Between 2010 and 2019, nearly every year there was at least one death attributable to racial violence. In 2019, two people were killed on racial grounds. A further 81 cases of racial bodily violence were registered. That year, another 206 people reported racist insults and threats, and another 52 cases of racist writing were also registered.
