Sexual crimes in Denmark 2008-2018

In Denmark, the number of reported criminal offences fluctuated in recent years. In 2018, the number amounted to more than 507 thousand crimes, and among these, there were nearly 7.3 thousand sexual crimes. It was the highest reported number within the past ten years. According to the Istanbul Convention, officially valid in Denmark since 2014, rape and all other non-consensual acts of a sexual nature must be classified as criminal offences. Nevertheless, there is no clear definition of rape in Danish law. It is only based on whether physical violence, threat, or coercion is involved or whether the victim was unable to resist.

Victims of criminal offences

In 2017, the number of reported victims of crime was highest in Denmark. It decreased again in 2018, amounting to almost 74.5 thousand crime victims. Most Danes were victims of offences against property. The number was higher for women than for men, as around 22.3 thousand female victims and nearly 15.4 thousand male victims were reported.

Safe country

In general, Denmark is considered a safe and peaceful country. In 2018, it came in fifth position in the ranking of the most peaceful countries in the world. Its Global Peace Index was 1.35. The following applies here: the lower the index value, the higher the peacefulness. This index is measured by the level of safety, the extent of current domestic and international conflicts, as well as the extent of militarization.
