Italy: abortion rate 2017 In 2017, the highest abortion rate was recorded among women aged 25 to 29 years old in Italy. Karman method was the most common kind of intervention in case of induced abortion. Most of the abortions were performed in public healthcare facilities , whereas 4.4 percent of them took place in nursing homes.

In Italy, abortion is regulated by Law 194 entered into force in 1978. This law is often defined as one of the most liberal laws about abortion in Europe. It allows pregnant women aged 18 years and older to resort to a private of public institution, asking to have an abortion performed within the first ninety days of pregnancy.  

Hospitals performing voluntary abortion

On the other hand, not all Italian healthcare facilities with a department of obstetrics and gynecology perform abortions. In Lombardy, for instance, there were 87 structures with an obstetrics and gynecology department in 2017. It was possible to seek an abortion in 65 of them.
