Italy: olive oil consumption 2005-2018 In the period from October 2017 to September 2018, 560.7 thousand tons of olive oil were consumed in Italy. This was a significant increase compared to the previous year, due to the production drop in the country and worldwide.
 Regular consumers 

   Italians are regular consumers of olive oil. Results of a survey conducted in 2017 indicated that 91 percent of them consumed it daily. In 2018, another poll showed that in 85 percent of cases, they purchased extra virgin olive oil. This commonly consumed olive oil is extracted mechanically from olives and has less than 0.8 percent acidity.

 Directly from the producer 

   A survey about purchase channels of olive oil in Italy revealed that in 2017, a significant share of households bought olive oil directly from the producer. Interestingly enough, 91.1 percent of respondents of the same poll consumed a limited amount (about ten percent) of their own produced olive oil.
