This statistic shows the total number of registered thefts of passenger cars in the Netherlands from 2012 to 2021. In 2021, approximately 5,400 passenger cars in the Netherlands were registered to have been stolen. This is approximately one thousand cars less than in the previous year.
In 2016, the total number of car thefts in the Netherlands reached a value of less than 10,000. Improved alarm systems in newly purchased cars, in combination with a better traceability, are the main reasons behind this trend. Police and insurance companies warn owners of older cars to install a newer alarm system.
