Global mining companies' CO₂ emissions 2017

Mining companies based on carbon dioxide emissions worldwide in 2016 (in million metric tons)*

by T. Wang, last edited Aug 9, 2019
Global mining companies' CO₂ emissions 2017 The United Kingdom’s Vedanta Resources and Switzerland’s Glencore are two of the largest mining company emitters in the world, releasing 53.3 million metric tons and 35.6 million metric tons of carbon dioxide, respectively.
Mining industry’s environmental future

The mining sector appears to be improving in managing operational emissions management as well as reducing the use of thermal coal, and increasing spending on low-carbon transition. The mining industry’s value chain is exposed to carbon emission regulations, especially from its downstream customers that emit much more than operational emissions. These customers tend to be from emissions-intensive industries.

Coal mining

Coal mining and abandoned coal mines are a significant producer of methane gas. As methane gas is found in coal mines, pockets of methane are released during mining. It can be dangerous as a source of air pollution or for coal miners, especially if the methane concentrates enough in underground mines to explode.
