Most popular TV programs in France 2021, by audience

The year 2020 was heavily impacted by the emergence of the coronavirus pandemic. Television was one the media mostly used by French people in order to keep updated on the outbreak, mostly thanks to televised news. The televised speeched of President Emmanuel Macron and both Jean Castex and Edouard Philippe as Prime Minister topped the list of the most watched TV programs during that year.  

Impact of the pandemic

  A high number of viewers have watched President Emmanuel Macron's televised speech on March 16, 2020. During that speech, the French president announced the introduction of a national lockdown and extraordinary measures to curb the spread of the pandemic in France. More than 12 million viewers chose the channel TF1 in order to watched the allocution. More than half of them considered the President's speech convincing.

Online TV consumption

  Besides the high audience of televised programs, the online consumption of series and other types of shows appears to become a common feature of TV consumption. 39 percent of French people surveyed in 2020 said watching TV series on the Internet every day or almost every day.
