Sales revenue IC industry Japan FY 2018, by business activity

In fiscal year 2018, the telecommunications segment recorded the highest sales revenue in the information and communications industry, generating a sales value of approximately 17.5 trillion Japanese yen. Software business activity ranked second with a sales value of around 15 trillion Japanese yen, followed by data processing and information services with a sales revenue of over six trillion Japanese yen. 

 Telecommunications business

In 2018, telecommunications business accounted for approximately 35 percent of the information and communications industry. Softbank Corp, NTT Docomo, and au by KDDI were among the main mobile phone operators in Japan. Softbank’s product sales and telecommunication services combined generated a revenue of around 3.6 trillion Japanese yen in 2018. In the same year, NTT Docomo’s operating revenue from their telecommunication services amounted to approximately 3.1 trillion Japanese yen. KDDI owns a mobile phone brand au (by KDDI) and reached a mobile communication revenue of  close to 1.8 trillion yen in 2018.  

 Software business

With a share of around 31 percent, software business accounted for the second highest sales revenue in the industry in 2018. That year, there were a total of approximately 22 thousand business enterprises in the Japanese software service industry, employing more than 707 thousand people. 

 Data processing and information services 

The sector that recognized the third highest sales revenue in the industry was data processing and information services, with a share of almost 13 percent. In 2018, over 310 thousand people were employed in the industry and around 9.9 thousand companies were engaged in this business activity.
