Electricity imports in Italy 2000-2021

In 2021, the net electricity imports to Italy amounted to four million tons of oil equivalent. This value fluctuated between a peak of 4.37 million tons of oil equivalent in 2015 and reached an all-time low in 2020.

Electricity production in Italy

The net generation of electricity in Italy peaked between 2005 and 2010, when it reached 290 terawatt-hours. It then started to oscillate and amounted to 278 terawatt-hours in 2021. In the same year, the main sources deployed to generate electricity in Italy were natural gas and renewables. Since 2019, natural gas is the leading source of electricity at ovr 40 percent of the total.    

Electricity consumption in Italy

The level of electricity consumption fluctuated over time, with an overall increase compared to the start of the 2000s. In 2021, the total electricity consumption in Italy amounted to approximately 308.9 terawatt-hours . The industry and the tertiary sectors had the greatest final electricity consumption, followed by the domestic sector. The agricultural sector recorded the lowest level of electricity consumption.
