Share of production of major electricity companies in Italy 2006-2020

The largest electricity producer in the Italian electricity market accounted for 16 percent of the total national production of electricity in 2020. This value decreased since 2006, when it was at over 34.5 percent, except for a temporary recovery between 2013 and 2015. Enel, Eni and Edison were the main households electricity providers in Italy in 2019, with market shares of 17, nine, and 7.6 percent, respectively.

Liberalization of the electricity market

It may be assumed that the decline in the market share of the major company was due to the process of liberalization of the electricity market, which is currently ongoing in Italy. Most probably this transition made the market less monopolized. As a matter of fact, the volume of electricity sold in the deregulated market in Italy constantly increased, up to 216.5 terawatt-hours in 2021. Conversely, the electricity sales in the regulated market experienced a steady decrease over the past few years. They amounted to 28 terawatt-hours in 2021.  

Number of companies selling electricity

In the same way, the number of sellers in the electricity deregulated market in Italy increased from less than 200 in 2011 to 537 in 2021. The firms providing electricity in the framework of the regulated market became less numerous.
