Number of healthcare physicians in Turkey 2009-2020

In 2020, there were over 171 thousand healthcare physicians employed in Turkey. Since 2009 this number has climbed year-on-year from less than 119 thousand physicians at the start of the provided time interval. As a ratio, this results in an average of 517 citizens to each physician in Turkey in 2019.  

Increases in other health areas in Turkey

Alongside this rise in physicians, the total number of employees in the Turkish health and social industry reached 1.47 million in 2020, almost 2.5 times the number of employees in 2009. Additionally, there were over 1.5 thousand inpatient medical institutions, again a figure which has generally risen in the preceding decade.

Interactions with the health system in Turkey

In 2019, roughly six in ten individuals had visited a general practitioner in the past 12 months, women were more likely than men to do so. Furthermore, a 2021 study found that 45 percent of those surveyed rated the quality of health care in Turkey as good, compared to 15 percent who rated it as poor.
