Brexit: voting outcome of major UK cities in the EU referendum 2016

In the Brexit referendum of 2016, almost three quarters of people who lived in Edinburgh voted to remain in the European Union. Several other major cities also had a majority of remain voters, including the English cities of London, Manchester, Liverpool, Newcastle and Leeds. In the UK’s second largest city, Birmingham a slight majority of people voted for Brexit.

How many people voted to leave?

Across the whole of the United Kingdom, the leave side was victorious after winning the votes of 17.4 million people. With the exception of London, every region of England had a majority of leave voters, but in Scotland and Northern Ireland more people voted to remain.

Halloween Brexit deadline

Although the United Kingdom was set to leave the European Union at the end of March 2019, this date was delayed until October 31, 2019 after the House of Commons rejected Theresa May’s Brexit deal three times early that year. The new prime minister, Boris Johnson has made it clear he will leave the EU by this date, with or without a deal.
