Number of electric vehicle charging stations in Germany 2012-2021, by type

In 2021, there were about 59,400 publicly available charging stations for electric vehicles in Germany. The most common type was normal charge with up to 22 kilowatts. The increase in charging stations throughout the country is a result of growing efforts in the fields of electric mobility.

Charging stations in Europe

In 2021, nearly 376,000 charging stations for plug-in electric vehicles (PEV) were spread throughout Europe. This value marks the highest level on record. On average, there were 11 PEVs per charging station in 2020.

Electric vehicle sales in Europe

Electric vehicle sales surged in Europe in the second half of 2020 and then began levelling out. In 2021, Norway was the country with the highest market share of passenger electric vehicle sales. In Germany, the market share of battery electric vehicles reached 13.4 percent, while that of plug-in hybrid electric vehicles came to a similar level of just over 12%.
