Distribution of pension fund assets globally 2021, by domicile and plan type
In 2020, North America had the largest share of defined benefit (DB) plans as of 2021. A total 72.7 percent of funds in North America were DB plans, with the remaining 25.8 percent and 9 percent of funds were defined contribution (DC) plans and reserve funds, respectively. In that year, around 65.2 percent of the pension fund assets in the Asia-Pacific region and around 51 percent in Europe were defined benefit (DB) plans.
