Main characteristics of the telecommunication market
In recent years, the revenue of the Turkish telecommunications market has been falling, and is estimated by the Statista Digital Market Outlook to shrink even more in the upcoming years. Furthermore, the export value of telecommunications equipment has decreased since 2006, reaching one of its lowest points in 2020, at 1.3 billion U.S. dollars. These considerable decreases in the revenue and the export value in U.S. dollar terms were also due to the Turkish lira plunging in value significantly, especially against the U.S. dollar. On the other hand, the annual net revenues of the major mobile operators in the country have been going up constantly since 2016, peaking in 2021 with a combined revenue of over 67 billion Turkish lira. Furthermore, Turkcell became the market leader among all mobile network operators, holding a 21 percent share as of 2021.
