Facebook has been a global leader among social networks, attracting billions of active users. It came in first in the list of mobile apps in Norway and was therefore perceived the most important in 2019. Danes, however, found the payment app MobilePay the most important. Payment apps have grown popular in the Nordics overall and there were over seven million Swish customers in Sweden in February 2019. Swish is a mobile payment service system in Sweden, launched in 2012 by six large local banks. The corresponding payment app with similar functions in Norway is Vipps and it had more than 100 thousand active users at the beginning of 2020.
During the coronavirus (COVID-19) outbreak in the Nordic region, some changes in app usage occurred. The video-sharing platform TIkTok saw a huge increase in popularity worldwide and the Nordic region was no exception. TikTok user numbers in Denmark in particular increased by 300 percent during the pandemic. Furthermore, the tracking app Smittestopp was launched in Norway and also in Denmark. Despite causing some debate regarding personal data protection, mobile apps have certainly become a key player in people’s lives.
