Aviation industry in Denmark - statistics & facts

The Danish aviation industry experienced increased growth from 2016 to 2018. In this period, the industry saw their annual turnover grow to approximately 2.9 billion euros in 2018. The number of active enterprises in the industry also grew substantially in this period, with a total of 82 enterprises in operation by the end of 2018. Though an increase in enterprises was experienced, the number of registered aircraft in Denmark reduced significantly in recent years. In 2020, the air transport industry reported that about 1,007 aircraft were operating in the industry.

Performance of Danish passenger and cargo segments

Although the number of flights at larger public airports in Denmark decreased in 2019 to 487,000, the number of passengers moving through these airports remained constant. A total of about 36.4 million passengers traveled through large airports, with 18.2 million departing and arriving in 2019. In parallel, the volume of cargo transported through bigger airports in Denmark experienced immense growth, reporting a total volume 2,733 metric tons in the same period. Of these goods, 2,696 metric tons were transported internationally.

SAS AB, parent company of SAS Scandinavian airlines, was the largest operating company in Nordic countries, reporting a turnover of about 4.35 billion euros as of September 2020. In the same period, SAS Scandinavian airlines reported a market share of 36 percent relative to flights entering and leaving the Scandinavian region. In addition, the SAS Scandinavian airlines employed a total of 10,445 employees across Nordic countries, making them the highest employer in 2020. Norway based Norwegian Air Shuttle also had a significant status with a turnover of over four billion euros in 2020.

Traffic at Danish airports

The Copenhagen Airport was the busiest of the bigger public airports in Denmark in 2019, with a total of 30.2 million passengers traveling through the airport. This airport was significantly busier compared to the other airports, with the next placed airport, Billund Airport, reporting a total of 3.7 million passengers in the same period. In 2020 however, the total number of passengers flying through Copenhagen Airport experienced a sharp decline, amounting to 7.5 million passengers as a result of flight restrictions aimed at curbing the spread of the COVID-19 virus. Copenhagen Airport reported a revenue of over four billion Danish Kroner in 2019, however this value declined significantly to about 1.58 billion Danish kroner in 2020.
