Aviation industry in Denmark - statistics & facts

Since the first experimental flights conducted by Jacob Ellehammer in the early 1900s, Denmark has made significant achievements in the aviation industry. Specifically, research and innovation activities for aircraft design, navigation systems, and aviation-related technologies made the country one of the aviation pioneers throughout the years. Denmark’s political agenda is to achieve the Net Zero emission goals determined in the Paris Agreement. This makes Denmark one of the forefront countries of the green aviation transition since the country has been actively searching for ways to reduce carbon emissions in the aviation industry. The national airline of Sweden, SAS- Scandinavian Airlines released 2,4 million metric tons of CO 2 as of 2022. The airline firm hopes to reduce carbon dioxide emissions by commercializing SAF use in flight operations by 2030.

Leading companies in the Danish aviation industry

SAS AB, the parent company of SAS Scandinavian Airlines, was the largest operating company in Nordic countries, reporting a revenue of about 31.8 billion euros as of 2022. In the same period, SAS Scandinavian Airlines reported a market share of 25 percent relative to flights entering and leaving the Scandinavian region. The country also hosts the main hub for SAS Scandinavian Airlines, the flag carrier of Norway, Sweden, and Denmark, at Copenhagen-Kastrup Airport. As a result, the majority of employees of Scandinavian Airlines are located in Denmark, amounting to 3,194 people in 2022.

Traffic at Danish airports

The Copenhagen Airport was the busiest of the bigger public airports in Denmark in 2022, with a total of over 22 million passengers traveling through the airport. This airport was significantly busier compared to the other airports, with the next placed airport, Billund Airport, reporting a total of 3.7 million passengers in the same period. Even in 2020, the total number of passengers flying through Copenhagen Airport experienced a sharp decline due to the COVID-19 pandemic; flight operations in the airport started improving after the first year of the pandemic. Copenhagen Airport reported a revenue of around 3.5 billion Danish Kroner in 2022; however, this value was still lower than the pre-pandemic years.
