Whilst the Spanish fashion industry has gone through some difficult times in the last decade, it is still a multi-billion-dollar industry, packed with big names, from high street chains such as
, to established luxury brands like Loewe.
A significant contributor to Spain’s fashion industry is the footwear sector. The manufacturing of footwear amounted to a production value of
4.4 billion euros in 2018. a value that had steadily risen over the preceding 10 years. On the consumer side, the sales growth of fashion has been pretty
constant over recent years, with the exception of 2020 when they were impacted by the coronavirus pandemic. In 2019, the total household spend on all footwear in Spain was approximately
7.7 billion euros.
Another trend in consumer behaviour in the footwear market, as with many markets, is the increased popularity in online shopping. In 2021 there were estimated to be roughly
18.5 million e-commerce users for footwear in Spain. The revenue of footwear sold through e-commerce is only
predicted to rise over the coming years.
Main companies
Industria de Diseño Textil S.A., more commonly known as Inditex, sells the highest value of clothing and footwear by wholesale by a very
large margin. Inditex is the company that owns the popular high street brands, Zara, Berksha, Pull and Bear, among others. It is the biggest fashion retailer in Spain, and one of the biggest fast fashion companies in the world.
When it comes to specialist footwear and leather goods retailers in Spain, the luxury retailer,
Loewe hermanos leads the way. Founded in 1846, it is now one of the leading, and oldest, luxury fashion houses. Their heritage is proven by the fact that Loewe was made official purveyor to the Royal Household of Spain in the early 20th century. Other popular specialized shoe retailers in Spain are Deichmann, Snipes and Compañia General de Zapateria.
International trade
While Spain's export figures are well below the manufacturing powerhouses of China or Vietnam, and it is not as big a purchaser as the USA, Spain also plays a role in the global footwear market. Spain
imports a slightly higher value of shoes than it
exports; as of 2020 Spain was the 10th
biggest exporter of footwear in the world and the 9th
biggest importer. Spain tends to primarily export its footwear around Europe, with the highest value exports of shoes going to
France, Italy and Germany. In the other direction, Spain receives imports of the highest total value from
China, Vietnam and Italy.
