Revenues related to food retail in non-specialised stores in Croatia are expected to remain flat over the short to medium term with estimates pegging them to increase from 6.8 billion U.S. dollars in 2018 to 7 billion U.S. dollars in 2023. One of the main reasons for such stymied growth is the state of the country’s economy which is expected to witness a declining trend over the next few years. Global uncertainties such as Brexit, the U.S. - China trade war and the aftermath of the Coronavirus outbreak, are responsible for this projected slowdown.

The Croatian grocery retail industry is dominated by the top 10 retailers who hold a share of over 80% according to data released by the Croatian Competition Agency – AZTN. Konzum is the market leader, followed by German giant Lidl, Plodine, Kaufland, Tommy and Spar. Interestingly, even though the large retailers hold a majority share in the market, it is the smaller retailers that have been growing at a faster pace, primarily due to increased M&A activity in this space.
