Industry revenue of “processing and preserving of fish, crustaceans“ in Denmark 2012-2024

Seafood preserving and processing is not only one of the key industries in Denmark but also one with a long and well established tradition in the country. Industry revenues are expected to increase from 3 billion U.S. dollars in 2019 to 3.2 billion U.S. dollars in 2024. This is not only because of a robust domestic market but also strong exports, with Germany, Norway, Italy, France and Sweden being its top five export partners. However, the ongoing Covid-19 situation is expected to adversely impact exports due to border closures and other economic disruptions.

Most of the country’s processing facilities are located in Northern Jutland, near major landing sites. Herring, European Plaice, Cod, Norway Lobster and Mackerel are the top five selling products with a combined value of around 235 million U.S. dollars in 2018.

Over the last few years, the government has started to impose strict regulations on the industry due to growing environmental concerns. For example, no approval is now granted to construct new saltwater fish farms or modify existing ones, if it would cause any sort of disturbance to the habitat of the species.
