As of 2014, there were 526 sand and gravel extraction sites in the UK, with majority of them being in Scotland, followed by East of England, Northern Ireland and South East England.

The U.S. leads worldwide industrial sand and gravel production

The U.S. was the leading producer of industrial sand and gravel worldwide in 2019, having produced 110 million metric tonnes that year. The Netherlands, followed by Spain, Turkey, Italy and India were next in line, with a combined production of 130 million metric tonnes. The UK ranked fourteenth, with an annual production of 4 million metric tonnes.
