
U.S. neonatal and postneonatal mortality rates in 2020, by ethnicity
Non-Hispanic black women had the highest rate of infant mortality in the U.S. in 2020. In that year there were just over 10 infant deaths per 1,000 live births among black women. Leading causes of infant mortality in the U.S. include congenital malformations, disorders related to short gestation and low birthweight, maternal complications, and sudden infant death syndrome.
