Awareness of QR code payment services Japan 2021
According to a survey conducted in January 2021, approximately 33.3 percent of respondents in Japan stated that they used QR code payment services. Around 14.6 percent had heard of the term "QR code payment method" but were not aware of the actual services nor how the system functions.
In Japan, there are various QR code service providers, and until recently, each provider used a different QR code. In order to reduce confusion and increase the usage of the payment method, the government started the promotion of a unified QR code and bar code called "JPQR". From 2019 onwards, several providers started to launch their QR code payment services through the unified JPQR.
