Reasons for using cashless payment methods in Japan 2024
According to a survey conducted from August to September 2024, benefits such as reward points and discounts were the leading reason for consumers in Japan to use cashless payment methods. Close to 66 percent of respondents said they used digital payment methods to gain benefits.
Following the most recent tax hike in October 2019, the Japanese government introduced a reward point system for consumers using cashless payment methods at small and medium-sized businesses as well as food service establishments. The purpose of the measure was to stimulate consumption following price increases.
