Net profit/loss of Swedbank AB 2009-2023
Swedbank’s profits were fluctuating but increased overall since 2010, when the bank had recovered after losses of around 10.4 billion Swedish kroner in 2009. The bank generated profits of around 34.1 billion Swedish kroner in 2023. Swedbank is the third largest bank in Sweden in terms of assets, after Handelsbanken and SEB. These Swedish banks are known as the three “storbanker”, large commercial banks.
Money laundering scandal
In recent time, Swedbank has been under the spotlight due to suspicions and investigations about money laundering in the Baltics, a region where the bank also operates. That the bank was under investigation was revealed in February 2019, and the scandal could cost the bank billions of kronor.
Reputation Index
Among the three large Swedish commercial banks: Handelsbanken, SEB, and Swedbank, the latter had the one of the lowest reputation index as of May 2021. Swedbank’s reputation index dropped significantly in 2019 and 2020, while it was rather stable for the other two banks. In 2020, Swedbank’s reputation index was down to eight, while Handelsbanken’s index was 55, and SEB’s 40.
