Since 2009, China has seen a marked decrease in the quality of its corporate debt, with the share of debt rated as speculative grade increasing from 35.73 percent to an estimated 49.74 percent in 2019. Over this time, the United States only saw a minor increase, from 43.17 percent to 47.98 percent.
Speculative grade debt is debt that has not been deemed to be of investment grade quality by a ratings agency. Generally, speculative grade debt provides investors with higher returns, but at the cost of higher risk.
