Of the major developed economies, Japan had the highest financial asset to equity ratio in its banking sector in 2022, amounting to 63 percent. Meanwhile, the United States registered the lowest ratio.

The financial asset to equity ratio is a measure of how leveraged a country's banking sector is. It is calculated by dividing the total financial securities of the banking sector, such as customer deposits and loans that have been made, by the market value of the sector's equity.
