CET1 ratio of the banking sector in Belgium 2014-2018

The resilience of Belgian banks increased between 2014 and 2018, as the sector's CET1 ratio grew with nearly one percentage point during this period. The Common Equity Tier 1 ratio shows much core capital the bank has versus its outstanding risks. Simply put, it displays how much capital a bank has in reserve in the event their investments go bad. The ratio is an important measure that was introduced in 2014, in the wake of the financial crisis, to prevent a future financial crisis. By 2019, banks are expected to reach a minimum requirement of 4.5 percent.
