CET1 ratio of selected banks in the Netherlands 2015-2019

The solvency of the six largest banks in the Netherlands was much higher than was required by European law, despite some large differences between them. The Common Equity Tier 1 ratio shows how much core capital the bank has versus its outstanding risks. Simply put, it displays how much capital a bank has in reserve in the event their investments go bad. The ratio is in an important measure that was introduced in 2014, in the wake of the financial crisis, to prevent a future financial crisis. By 2019, banks are expected to reach a minimum requirement of 4.5 percent.

Supplementary notes

Dutch sources do not publish numbers for 2018 and 2019 that cover the entire market. Instead, domestic sources only mention financial figures per bank.

This ranking consists of four retail banks (ABN AMRO, ING, Rabobank and Volksbank) as well as two specialized banks which exclusively provide services for the Dutch government and other publicly owned organizations: BNG and NWB (or Nederlandse Waterschapsbank).
