Coronavirus (COVID-19) patients and number of death Japan 2020, by prefecture

As of June 26, 2020, the highest number of 5,997 patients with coronavirus (COVID-19) were confirmed in Tokyo Prefecture in Japan, followed by Osaka Prefecture with 1,814 people. Out of 47 prefectures in the country, cases with the virus were reported in 46 prefectures. The health ministry announced on June 26 that the total number of confirmed coronavirus cases in the country amounted to 18,197 and the clusters of infected patients reached 26.

The first confirmed case of the coronavirus in the northernmost prefecture was reported on January 28, 2020, as a tourist from Wuhan city in China. The number of cases spread widely in the prefecture in February after the Sapporo Snow Festival was held in Sapporo city. The large number of tourists, as well as inhabitants in other areas in the prefecture, gathering in Sapporo for the festival and dispersing afterwards all over Hokkaido might have been a reason for the rapid spread. As of the middle of March, two clusters, one in Sapporo City, and the other in Kitami city, were confirmed, and the prefectural government had not yet invalidated the “declaration of emergency” issued on February 28.

Aichi Prefecture is located in the Chubu region, a central region of Japan. In Nagoya, a capital of the prefecture and the fourth-largest city in the country, two clusters already emerged as of March. The first cluster was spread in a sports gym, and the second cluster grew from infections among residents and staff in a welfare facility.

Osaka Prefecture has the only cluster in Japan so far with 50 or more infections. The spread occurred through events held in February at several live music clubs. As of the middle of March, the number had continued to increase, and the prefectural government suggested that all people who visited those music clubs during the time period should report to public health centers.
